CONCEPT | “Decolonizing the Future” is the first handmade artwork created by Cariño Ateliê. It repositions the Black body within the symbolic territory of tomorrow. For decades, narratives of the future — technology, science, fiction and progress — have often been imagined from a Eurocentric perspective. Tomorrow was frequently designed without the bodies, histories and cosmologies of Black and Afro-Brazilian people.
In this work, the axis shifts. The Black figure occupies the center of the construction of the future. The face becomes a territory of imagination where ancestry, nature and invention coexist. Memory and future meet to project new possibilities of existence.
The artwork is part of a residential research project by the artist Lucas Belchior on Afrofuturism in the visual arts, directly engaging with this theme — an artistic and philosophical movement that connects past, present and future through the experiences of the African diaspora. A field of creation where technology, spirituality and Black identity coexist as a force of transformation.
To decolonize the future is to reclaim something fundamental: the right to imagine tomorrow from our own roots.
