CONCEPT | "Sometimes We Just Don't Fit In" is an original artwork, handmade by artist Lucas Belchior, which investigates the relationship between body, belonging, and the threshold between staying and the right to refuse to shrink yourself just to occupy a space.
There is a human contradiction in wanting to fit. Just as we feel uncomfortable, we stubbornly keep trying to find room where there is none. We are taught to adapt, diminish ourselves, squeeze in, and negotiate parts of who we are to occupy places and relationships that are too small for our power. This piece stems from that very conflict: an immense Brazilian soul, crossed by ancestry, history, desire, and intensity, trying to accommodate itself where people persistently demand it to downsize.
In Brazil, there is an intimate relationship with excess: we are made of pure presence, of total affection, of our very own way of moving through the world. Brazil is built on grandness. It is our inheritance. Yet, we carry historical scars that taught us to control our gestures, contain our expressions, and seek belonging within structures that frequently compress us. The central figure, crossed by a deep red, materializes this tension between the desire to fit and the impossibility of reducing one's own existence to satisfy the expectations of others.
Not every space deserves the effort of shrinking ourselves to occupy it. This artwork serves as a reminder that it is okay not to fit. And, if you must occupy it - shatter the space. Infiltrate it. Revolutionize it. Our country is born out of courage.
DETAILS | Original and limited edition artwork, handmade using India ink and oil pastel on 300g slightly textured couché paper. The textured surface lends elegance and depth to the piece, enhancing the contrast between the spontaneity of the stroke, the unsettling intensity of the red, and the expressiveness of the drawing.
