CONCEPT | “Favela in Smudging” is an authorial photograph by Lucas Belchior that observes an ancient gesture within a contemporary setting. On the terrace, above the flow of the city and everyday anxiety, a figure raises the incense burner and spreads smoke over the territory. The simple gesture crosses centuries of Afro-Brazilian spiritual memory: to cleanse, protect and open paths. In the landscape below, the favela stretches like a living organism. Houses, hills and streets form a territory where life happens collectively. From the rooftops, the people of Rio find a rare place of pause. It is there that one breathes after the day, takes a hose shower, a rooftop shower, and watches the sun disappear between the mountains where the city finally slows down. The photograph transforms this moment into a ritual. The terrace ceases to be only architecture and becomes a space of creation, care and observation of the world — the exact potential moment in which the Brazilian feels at the top of the pyramid.
