- REDENTOR is the first piece that pre-inaugurates Lucas Belchior's new collection: "CRIA - É DAQUI QUE NÓS VEM," dedicated to the territories and the small scenes that form the carioca experience. A collection about Brazil lived from the inside: about the beauty that exists within the small things, and about how our art is born from daily life.
CONCEPT | "REDENTOR" is an original artwork, handmade by artist Lucas Belchior, based on one of Rio de Janeiro's most recognizable symbols: Christ the Redeemer among the clouds, surrounded by the city, by nature, and by the life that happens beneath it. This work is the first fragment of a larger manifesto about the real Brazil - Brazil as it is. It is an editorial and visual invitation to slow down the gaze and perceive that our greatest beauty is not found in untouchable gallery settings, but in the small details and the movement of our ordinary daily life.
Working line by line with the meticulous technique of cross-hatching in India ink, the artist reconstructs the carioca space from the lived experience of those who step on the city’s ground every single day, reaching far beyond a mere postcard of Rio. It emerges as part of a landscape we know from up close.
The houses, the hills, the corner bar, the human warmth that glues bodies together, the altinha on the beach, the sand stuck to the skin, the favela celebrating, the carnival throughout the entire year—the collection is born to bring to light our true scenery, the one we recognize as home. Everything that is ours, and that we need to remember is ours. The collection demonstrates our territory far beyond what people try to simplify about Rio de Janeiro, far beyond the grand landscapes that surround the travel dreams of the entire world.
Here, the artist rejects tourist makeup and embraces the vulnerability of the corre (the daily hustle). Beauty here is made on grit and sweat, in the common scenes we live through without giving them weight, yet which hold our living history. It is pure full awareness of the memory of what we are.
The drawing approaches a memory recorded by hand: the more you look, the more details appear. REDENTOR is about recognizing our own scenery. About realizing that we do not need to look very far to find what moves us - IT IS ALL HERE.
