CONCEPT | Zulu Warrior was born from an artistic experience by Lucas Belchior in contact with Zulu natives in South Africa. The artwork is part of a material and intellectual research process developed on African soil, where body, territory, ancestry, and listening became matter.

The Zulu people carry a history marked by strength, courage, and warrior foundations. In the artwork, the mask, the spiritual shield, and the traditional spear appear as symbols of protection, direction, and memory. They are not merely visual elements: they are ancestral presences.

The warrior appears in Sukhasana, a meditative resting position. But here, rest is not weakness. It is safety. It is the strength of someone who does not need to attack in order to exist. In the hands, the gestures of Gyan Mudra and Abhaya Mudra evoke consciousness, focus, ancestral knowledge, protection, and the absence of fear.

These sensations passed through Lucas’ body during his artistic research while staying in South Africa. The encounters with the natives strengthened in the artist the perception that Africa is not a distant origin, but a living root. There is an African map over our thoughts, even if unconsciously.

In Zulu Warrior, South Africa, Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro meet. The Carioca strength, the warm body, faith, the street, and survival are also born from this heritage.
